Building a Recovery-Focused Community at The Freemen House

At The Freemen House, we are more than just a place to live—we are a thriving, recovery-focused community dedicated to helping individuals rebuild their lives. Our mission is rooted in the belief that recovery is best achieved through connection, structure, and mutual support. By fostering a welcoming and safe environment, we empower residents to grow, heal, and thrive as they embrace their recovery journey.

Our Commitment to Excellence

As a certified member of the New Hampshire Coalition of Recovery Residences (NHCORR), The Freemen House operates at the highest standards of safety, ethics, and recovery support. This certification ensures that our homes provide a clean, supportive, and recovery-focused environment where residents are respected, valued, and equipped for success.

Key principles include:

  • Safe, Structured Homes: Our residences are clean, home-like spaces designed to promote healing and accountability.
  • Integrity and Transparency: We prioritize ethical operations and open communication to protect and empower residents.
  • Community Engagement: As part of the larger Dover and Rochester areas, we maintain positive relationships with neighbors and local organizations.

NHCORR certification offers peace of mind, knowing the environment is designed to foster lasting recovery and personal growth.

  • Operates with integrity and transparency
  • Respects and upholds the rights of residents
  • Embraces the social model of recovery, fostering peer support and connection
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and welcoming home-like environment
  • Acts as a positive and responsible neighbor within the community

For individuals in recovery, this certification is a symbol of trust and quality. It ensures that, beyond offering a drug- and alcohol-free environment:

  • Financial policies are clear and straightforward
  • Residents are treated with respect and dignity
  • Participation in rules and responsibilities is expected, promoting accountability
  • Recovery is approached in a personal, intentional, and structured way
  • They will experience a supportive, family-like atmosphere where they can rebuild their lives

Social Model Philosophy

NHCORR certification signifies that a home embraces and practices the Social Model philosophy, a proven approach to fostering lasting recovery.

Social Model recovery homes are built on the understanding that recovery thrives in connection. Residents learn to lead productive lives by building interdependent peer relationships, which are crucial for sustaining recovery from addiction and alcoholism. Recognizing that loneliness and isolation can fuel relapse, these homes are designed to:

  • Promote Connection and Fellowship: Residents form meaningful bonds that combat isolation and create a sense of belonging.
  • Foster Accountability: Housemates support and hold each other accountable for actions, choices, and participation that reflect a commitment to recovery.
  • Encourage Community Integration: Individuals are inspired to be part of, rather than apart from, their community.

This shared connection and mutual responsibility for the home’s well-being distinguish Social Model recovery homes from other alcohol- and drug-free living arrangements, such as rooming houses, boarding houses, or institutional facilities.

In essence, Social Model recovery homes operate as the functional equivalent of a family. Residents live together under a common housekeeping management plan, offering each other mutual support and promoting fellowship, stability, and sustained recovery. By creating a home-like environment rooted in shared responsibility and communal growth, Social Model homes provide the foundation for long-term healing and transformation.

Community Resources

At The Freemen House, we understand that recovery extends beyond sobriety—it’s about building a balanced, fulfilling life. That’s why we connect residents with local resources to support their growth in all areas, including:

  • Vocational Training and Employment Opportunities: Assisting residents in finding and maintaining meaningful work.
  • Spiritual and Emotional Development: Encouraging personal reflection, faith, and inner healing.
  • Physical and Mental Health Services: Providing access to local healthcare professionals and wellness programs.
  • Financial Stability: Offering guidance on budgeting, saving, and financial independence.

Through these resources, residents develop a weekly rhythm of activities and responsibilities that align with their recovery goals and long-term aspirations.

We believe in the power of partnership. By collaborating with local organizations, businesses, churches, and recovery programs, The Freemen House enhances the support and opportunities available to our residents.
